NASA Discovered Fewer Emissions from Jet Engines Using Biofuels

The use of biofuels is becoming increasingly popular. In mid-March of 2017, NASA released a study on particle emissions left by jet engines. According to the study, engines that used biofuels could reduce their particle emissions by up to 70 percent.

The study compiled data gathered during test flights for the Alternative Fuel Effects on Contrails and Cruise Emissions Study. The flights, completed in 2013 and 2014, looked at how alternative fuels affect engine performance, aircraft contrails (condensation trails in the sky), and engine emissions.

NASA focused heavily on persistent contrails because they create long-lasting clouds in the atmosphere. Researchers believe that these contrails negatively affect the environment.

Because of the study’s results, researchers felt hopeful for both the environment and aviation economics. If biofuels become widely used, jets and other aircraft will minimize the impact they have on the environment.
